Ving Rhames Biography
A native New Yorker, Ving grew up in Harlem, Manhattan. This offered him the opportunity to attend New York’s School of Performing Arts, where he found his theatrical calling and later transferred to Julliard. Although Rhames initial theatrical debut was Broadway, it was his character role Marcellus Wallace in Pulp Fiction (Palme D’Or Cannes Film Festival Winner) that received worldwide acclaim. Major roles followed in the Mission Impossible series movies, ConAir and Kojak. Rhame’s talent is not solely devoted to film; he won the Golden Globe for best actor in TV HBO’s Don King: Only in America. Never one to turn down controversial roles, Rhames recently completed filming for Phantom Punch, the violent story behind world heavyweight boxing champion, Sonny Liston.
In Saving God, Ving Rhames plays the lead role as Pastor Armstrong Cane, a released convicted felon of manslaughter, who during his incarceration finds salvation in God. He returns to his old neighbourhood to take over as Pastor from his recently deceased father at the First Community Church of God. Even around the tiny, rundown church, the neighbourhood is fraught with gangs, drug dealers and addicts. Cane realizes his work will be a huge challenge not only from his new surroundings but also from his tainted past.
Ving Rhames quote: "Quite honestly I never had a desire to be an actor. I tell people, I did not choose acting; acting chose me. In about 9th grade, an English teacher told me I had a talent to act. He said I should audition for a performing arts high school so I did, on a whim. I got accepted. Then I got accepted at the Julliard School and by then, I was serious about it. I think God has blessed each of us with at least one gift. So I think it's a matter of do we find it within our lifetime. I think that's what God blessed me with. I think I am doing what God put me on this planet to do. Since God is the foundation of my life, anything that streams from that can only be positive".
Ving Rhames currently resides in the Los Angeles, California area with his wife, Deborah Reed and their three children.
